Scholarships

The scholarships available for JCPS students through the Johnston County Education Foundation are:

The Joyce Wade Scholarship ($500)

The JCEF Scholarship committee, with a representative from the Johnston County Principal and Assistant Principal Association (JCPAPA), will select the recipient from the applications submitted. Students must complete the Johnston County Education Foundation Scholarship Application, and the criteria for selection is:

  • High school senior who exhibits leadership and compassion within the school or community.
  • Child of a Johnston County Public Schools employee
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
  • Planning to enroll full-time at an accredited two-year or four-year institution, no later than the next Fall semester.
  • Three references from different adults in each of the following areas: academic, extra-curricular and personal. 
  • An essay (300 words or less) which describes your goals for the future and how you plan to make a difference in the community through leadership and/or service. 
  • A current high school transcript.

The Shrimanker Family Scholarship ($1,000 each)

The JCEF Scholarship committee will select the recipients. The scholarships may not be awarded to students from the same high school consecutively and the scholarships will be provided to two students from different high schools each year. Applicants must complete the JCEF Scholarship Application, and the criteria is: 

  • Acceptance and attendance at an accredited college, community college or university as a full time student.
  • Having a financial need
  • Student must remain free of drug and alcohol use
  • Outstanding ability in the education field

Neuse Termite and Pest Control Scholarship ($1,000-$4,000)

The applicants must complete the JCEF Scholarship Application. The JCEF and family members of Neuse Termite and Pest Control will select the recipient. This scholarship is intended to assist a student (or family) who has experienced an unusual financial hardship. The criteria is:

  • A family household income of $100,000 or less.
  • A minimum one-page essay, describing that financial hardship and the impact it has had on you and your family. Explain your plans after high school and how a scholarship will help you reach your goals.   
  • Having no other substantial scholarship through the school’s selection committee or that the committee is aware of at the time of the selection.
  • Involvement in a church.
  • A minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0. 
  • Involvement in after-school activities, including athletics and other school-related activities or work. A summary of activities should be kept and provided with the application.
  • Must remain free of drug and alcohol use.
  • A current high school transcript.

The Cooper Academy Scholarship ($500)

The JCEF Scholarship Committee, a teacher from Cooper Academy and the PTA board member will select the recipient. Applicants must complete the JCEF application. The criteria is:

 

  • Attended three or more years and completed fifth grade at Cooper Academy.
  • Attending college, community college or university as a full-time student.
  • Graduated from any of the Johnston County high schools.
  • Students must remain free of drug and alcohol use.
  • The student must write an essay, approximately one page, on the value of education. Portions of this essay, or the essay in its entirety, may be used in presentation of materials.

The Pine Level Elementary School Scholarship ($1,000)

Applicants must complete the JCEF application and the scholarship committee will select the recipient. The criteria is:

 

  • Attendance at Pine Level Elementary School (Micro-Pine Level Elementary 2008-2016) for all six years and completion of fifth grade.
  • Intention to pursue a degree in elementary education.
  • Maintain an unweighted GPA of 3.0.
  • Attending college, community college or university as a full-time student.
  • Perform a minimum of 20 hours of volunteer work. A summary of activities should be kept and provided with the application.
  • Students must remain free of drug and alcohol use. 
  • A current high school transcript.

Rotary Club of Central Johnston County Scholarship

To apply, please see your school guidance counselor for criteria and application.

James L. "Jimmy" Earp Golf Scholarship ($500)

The JCEF and a member of the James “Jimmy” Earp family will select the scholarship recipient.   Applicants must complete the JCEF application. The criteria is:

 

  • Play golf for 1-4 years with your high school.
  • A recommendation from your golf coach submitted with your application. 
  • Accepted and plan to attend an accredited university, college or community college as a full time student.
  • Continue in the golf field.

The Tana S Brinke Future Educators Memorial Scholarship ($1,000)

The family of Tana S Brinke wishes to provide a scholarship to a worthy graduate of Cleveland High School or West Johnston High School. The intention of the scholarship is to honor and remember Tana S Brinke. The criteria is: 

 

  • Maintain a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0.
  • Attend college, community college or university as a fulltime student. 
  • Enrolling in any type of education field.
  • Respond to the two following essay questions. Responses should be 500 words or less: 
    • Can you tell us about an experience or person that has shaped your desire to become an educator?
    • What do you believe you have to offer the students of the future?

Teacher Grants

The Johnston County Education Foundation provides administration for privately-funded scholarships and awards that benefit JCPS staff members.

Tom I. Davis Leadership Award

This award, available for all employees of Johnston County Public Schools, is designed to help offset the cost of leadership training or similar opportunities. Past recipients include the JCPS Bus Garage Parts Manager, a teacher assistant working towards classroom certification and teachers working on advanced degrees in a variety of fields.

Tom I. Davis, Jr. Leadership Award Application
This award was established in recognition of the outstanding leadership of Tom I. Davis, Jr. This award’s purpose is to assist JCS employees as they grow in leadership. The Founders of this award and JCEF recognize that educational leadership and excellence in education will extend into the greater community.

All leadership growth opportunities will be considered for funding: Classes in personal improvement or professional skills improvement or required classes for degreed programs.

The recipient must work in the Johnston County Schools the following year or return the full award to the Johnston County Education Foundation.  The award amount is $1000.00 per year.
